Eye witness Account:
Mariangela Dolci
Between 12 and 23 July 1943 (I don't remember the precise date), at about 2.30 pm, I saw an old allied reconnaissance aircraft heading for the the border, flying low; after having made a few turns and spins, it tilted, then tried to straighten up for landing, but too late; the pilot's manoeuvre failed and the aircraft hit the slopes of the mountain. The petrol tanks exploded and caught fire, the wings and some parts of the aircraft broke off in mid-air and were reduced to fragments. I also rushed to the site of the disaster. The aircraft had crashed just above and a little more to the left of the pyrite quarries at Brosso; the cockpit was found at a higher altitude level while the engines, a propeller and the undercarriage fell further down, all however on the mountainside. The two pilots, still attached to their seats, having been thrown out of the cockpit, lay charred on the ground. I do not know their nationality - their identity papers and a gold neckchain that one of them was wearing were removed by some soldiers who immediately rushed to the scene. I have kept a piece of silk from the parachute belonging to one of them. It seems to me that it these soldiers intended to bury the victims in Ivrea.

Instead, they were buried at Brosso:
Shortly afterwards, their death having been confirmed by Dr. Giacomo Naretti di Vico and a prayer and a blessing having been said, they were placed in a coffin. The two bodies remained in the mortuary for two days, for although it was virtually certain that only two people had been on board, other soldiers were sent to the crash site. The searches went on for a further two nights and days during which a lot of material was collected but no other bodies were found. On the morning of 18 July, two days after the crash, the cemetery custodian Naldino Battistino was instructed to dig a grave. A few hours later, after vespers and the ringing of the bells, in the presence of very few people, Don Giuseppe Audi Grivetta, the parish priest of Brosso, celebrated the funeral rites and buried the two foreigners.

The Wellington MF 399 was lost during a mission to bomb the marshalling yards at Milan Lambrate.
Don Carlo Prandi, the parish priest of Triginto, near Mediglia, reported that:
'Saint Rocco saved us from many dangers that occurred during the five years of war, especially during the night of 10 July 1944 when a British plane caught fire near the cemetery, resulting in the deaths of seven British airmen, and of having spared us on that same occasion from having been hit by three large bombs... '
The aircraft crashed to the ground - we do not know if due to an accident or because it was hit by the anti-aircraft guns of Mediglia; the municipal guard Cesare Miragoli and the gravedigger Edoardo Bossi were sent to supervise the remains of the wrecked plane 'for security reasons'; however, in the afternoon of the 12th, sixteen-year-old Enrico Besozzi lit a fire “in the vicinity of an explosive device” that had come from the cockpit, which luckily exploded without causing any damage. The Municipal Secretary rushed to the scene and testifed to the fact that all the material had been removed from the crash site 'by unknown persons' after the threats had forced the two guardians to leave. There were still some dangerous articles left lying on the ground.'
Instead of seven, the crew consisted of five aviators.
