On 17 December 1945, Sapper Watson was admitted to 64 British General Hospital, based in Milan, with a fractured jaw. He died three days later.

The was not the first time Sapper Watson that had been hospitalised with head injuries. On 31 January 1944, while off duty, he had suffered lacerations to his forehead and concussion.

He was not initially held responsible for the second incident, but the results of an investigation held in May 1946 showed that his jaw had been fractured during a fight while on duty.
